All classes: Burdette Park is currently accepting applications for the summer season of 2008. Part-time positions include: Lifeguards, Deck Patrol, Concession Workers, Cashiers, EMTs, Grounds Crew, Housekeepers, Office Positions, Day Camp Counselors, and Discovery Camp Counselors. Applications may be picked up at the Park main office – 5301 Nurrenbern Road,Evansville, IN 47712 Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. You can call 435-5602 for additional information. Students 18 (by May 27) and older: Burdette Park is looking for help in Summer Day Camp Housekeeping and Support May 27 – August 1, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Apply at Burdette Park, Attention: Joyce or call 435-5602. All Classes: The Hilltop Inn Restaurant ( 1100 Harmony Way) is looking for bussers evenings and weekends. If you are interested, call 422-1757 and ask for Marta or Lanette. Juniors: Hoosier Girls State will be June 22 -28 in Terre Haute, Indiana. Hoosier Boys State is usually the week before that, but the official dates are not available right now. This is a fun week in which students learn about Indiana Government by participating in elections on the local, county and state levels within the Girls/Boys State. 680 rising Seniors will be attending each of the weeks. Local American Legions pay students’ expenses to attend. Each high school can send two young men and two young women. If your student is interested in taking part in either of these opportunities, please have him/her see Mrs. Mundy as soon as possible and they will be given an application form or information where to find it. All Classes: The Counseling Office now has information about the Oxbridge Academic 2008 Summer programs. There are three different programs -- Barcelona, Spain (July 7 – August 3), Paris France (July 2 – July 29) and Montpellier, France (July 7 – August 3). Specific information can be found at www.oxbridgeprograms.com. Two other academic programs are available in England – The Oxford Tradition (June 29 – July 27) and The Cambridge Tradition (July 6 – August 3). The English programs are only available to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Each of these experiences is $6795. Applications are available on line. Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: Now that winter is just around the corner, the Counseling Office has started to get Summer workshop information. Ball State University’s Interior Design Program for the first time will offer a summer workshop: the You Summer Design Forum. Only 40 students can be accommodated. Participants will be selected from those whose applications demonstrate interest and creative ability in the field of interior design and superior achievement in high school classes. Submission of a portfolio and a personal interview are among the requirements. The intensive training program will be held June 24 to July 3 on the Ball State campus. The total fee will be $1,039. Some full scholarships will be awarded to cover the fee. You can learn more at www.bsu.edu/interiordesign. Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: Clemson University offers a 2-week summer Science, Engineering and Architecture Enrichment Program to gifted high school students. The cost for most classes is $1,400 for the 2-weeks except for the Wireless Sensor Network Programming which $1,500. This includes room and board during that time. The 2-week architecture class is only offered to the class of 2009 and is also $1,500. A list of classes and applications are available at www.clemson.edu/summerscience. Classes of 2009, 2010, 2011: Cornell University offers several summer programs that range from 1-week to 6-weeks. Costs range from $1600 - $7,975 that will cover tuition and housing. Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: Earlham College (Richmond, IN) offers a 2-week program called Explore A College where students develop college-level study and research skills. The dates are June 22 – July 5. The cost is $1,600 for tuition, room, board and 2 semester hours of credit. Get details at www.earlham.edu/~eac. Classes of 2009, 2010, 2011: George Washington University, (Washington, D. C.) offers several summer programs. 10-day Mini-courses (June 22 – July 2) are open to Grades 9 through 11. 6-week courses (July 6 – August 15) are offered to rising Seniors (class of 2009). Some need based assistance is available to eligible students applying to the 6-week program only. Course titles, cost information and application are available at www.summerscholars.gwu.edu. Class of 2009, 2010, and 2011: Indiana State University, Terre Haute offers a Summer Honors Program for rising Seniors July 20-26. Rising Sophomores and Juniors may enroll in some of the seminars on a space-available basis. Visit www.indstate.edu/experience for more information. Ten different seminars will be available. Included are Forensic Facial Reconstruction, Athletic Training, News Reporting, and Health Careers. The cost is $300. An additional $75 is charged to students in the Aviation Seminar. Apply by June 2nd. Indiana University, Bloomington offers many programs during the summer. Some programs are for college credit and many are geared for high school students thinking about careers and college. Some programs are free. You can learn about several opportunities at www.summerindiana.edu. Classes of 2009 and 2010: Indiana University of Pennsylvania offers the Robert E. Cook Honors College. The 2008 Summer Honors Program is hosted July 13 – 26 in Indiana, PA. The cost is $750. Find specific information at www.iup.edu/honors/shp. All classes: The Junior Statesmen Foundation offers several summer programs – at Georgetown, Princeton, Yale and Sanford; a Presidential Nomination Convention Symposia for teens in Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul and Summer State Symposia in Arizona, Texas, California, Washington, Ohio and New Jersey. You can check these out at http://jsa.org. A brochure is available in the Counseling Office. All classes: There are several summer camps for film and acting. These are very expensive. Find the New York Film Academy Summer Camps at www.nyfa.com/summercamps. Information on the School of Cinema & Performing Arts can be found at www.SOCAPA.org. All Classes: Northwestern University, Chicago offers the Civic Leadership Institute June 22 – July 11 on the University of Illinois’ Chicago campus. Students will explore the complex challenges that affect our communities today and are introduced to tools and strategies for community development and positive social change. Students will engage in service learning projects in urban neighborhoods. Applicants must have a minimum score of 510 on an SAT or 24 on the ACT Reading or its equivalent. The cost is $2800 for tuition, room and board for 3 weeks, books and materials. Applications are available in the Counseling Office and at www.ctd.northwestern.edu/cep. and must be postmarked by May 15th. Other Civic Leadership Institute sites are Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, June 29 – 18 and San Francisco State University, San Francisco, July 20 – August 8. Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: Northwestern University, Evanston IL offers a National High School Institute with summer programs in Music, Debate, and Speech (Forensics). For the class of 2009 only the Summer program offers Journalism, Film and Video Production and Theatre (Acting, Design/Tech or Musical). Specific information and dates can be found at www.northwestern.edu/nhsi. Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: The Savannah College of Art and Design offers several summer programs in animation, digital photography, drawing, fashion, furniture design, sequential art and more. For the class of 2009 a 5-week residential program will be held June 21 – July 26. Other seminars will be held June 22-28, July 6-12, July 13-19, and July 20-26 in Savannah. One seminar will be held in Atlanta July -12. More info can be found at www.scad.edu/summer. Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: The University of Chicago offers a Summer Session to high school students in which they can explore specialized topics intensively through hands-on exploration. 3-, 5-, 6- or 90-week sessions are available. Languages offered are Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), French German, Greek (classical), Hebrew (Modern), Italian and Japanese. A 4-week practicum in Paleontology is offered through The Field Museum in Chicago at an ongoing expedition in Wyoming. There is also a 4-week intensive lab experience in the Biological Science. The Traveling Academy will offer a 3-week study abroad program to Explore the Classical world through Greek drama. Costs range from $4,000 to $7,500. Classes of 2010 and 2011: The University of Dallas offers a “Arete, a Summer Program at their Irving, TX campus July 13 - 26. Students will read and discuss great texts in the Western tradition, write in its most persuasive forms and view works of art. Some of the writers that will be studied are Plato, Aristotle, Sophocles, Shakespeare, Nietzsche, Faulkner and O’Conner. The cost is $1200 which covers classroom materials, tuition, room and board and activity fees. More information can be found at www.udallas.edu/summer/arete.cfm. Class of 2009 and 2010: The University of Dallas also offers a 2-week study abroad program – Shakespeare in Italy -- July 21 – August 5. Three of Shakespeare’s plays – Julius Caesar, Othello and Merchant of Venice will be worked through. The cost is $4650.00 which covers Group airfare from Chicago-O’Hare, Tuition, room and board, documentation and all museum and site entrance fees. Since it is past their early application deadline, there is no guarantee that there is still room. More information is available at www.udallas.edu/travel/italy.cfm. Class of 2009: Washington University, St. Louis offers two 5-week summer programs – June 8 to July 12 and July 13 to August 15. Application deadlines are May 2 for the first session and June 6th for the second. |
