Classes of 2009, 2010 and 2011: The 2007-08 Siemens Westinghouse Competition in Math, Science & Technology: Instructions and applications are available online at www.siemens-foundation.org. Deadline is receipt of research project materials by the Siemen Foundation before 5:00 p.m. EDT, Monday, October 1, 2008. Senior Athletes: The Wendy’s High School Heisman Scholarship application is a available online at www.wendysheisman.com. Each high school across the country will have one male and one female selected to compete for the state award. The first 41,000 applicants will receive a Wendy’s Gift card ranging in value from $5.00 to $50.00 (mailed in November). Applicants must have at least a “B” (4.0/6.0) average and be competing in at least one sport. Application deadline is October 1. All Classes: The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards application is on-line at www.prudential.com/spirit or www.principals.org/prudential (access key: spirit). If you have been involved in some outstanding community service activities over the past year, fill out an application and submit it to the Counseling Office by October 31. Memorial can nominate one student to be considered for the $1,000 or more awards. The 2009 Horatio Alger Scholarship application is now available online at www.horatioalger.org/scholarships. This is a need based scholarship. Family income should be $50,000/year or lower and applicants must have at least a “C” (3.0/6.0) average. Application deadline is October 30. Class of 2007: Arts Recognition and Talent Search offers several scholarships. Information and application is available on line at www.artsawards.org. The registration fee is $40. There is a $5.00 discount if you register on-line. The final deadline for registration is October, 2008. Audition/portfolio postmark deadline is November 1. All Classes: The 15th annual First Freedom Student Competition Essay is open to all students in grades 9 through 12. However, students must have competition sponsorship from their Social Studies or English teacher. Students are to write a 750-1,250 word essay on religious freedom, its history, current importance and relevance in their lives. Specific information is available at www.firstfreedom.org. Click on student competition. On-line registration deadline is November 24 and the essay entry deadline is a November 29 postmark. SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) offers offers more than 60 corporate and University-sponsored scholarships to students interested in the study of engineering and related sciences. Applicants must have at least a 5.5/6.0 GPA during 10th and 11th grades and rank in the 90th percentile for SAT and/or ACT. Applications are available on-line at www.sae.org/students/engschlr. There is a charge for this application. Application deadline is December 1. All Classes: The Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Excel Awards is in its 20th year. This is a creative arts competition allowing high school authors, poets, artists, songwriters, film makers, and performers the opportunity to express themselves on topics of interest and vital importance to other Indiana teens. Categories include Writing, 2D Art, Video Art, 3D Art, Performance and Music. There is no limit to the number of categories a student may enter. Partner entries are acceptable, but only 3 students would be eligible for awards and prize money. Entries will be accepted at all Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance Offices between Monday, December 8 and Friday, December 12. Entry forms will be available on line at www.infarmbureau.com. The AXA Foundation, in association with U.S. News & World Report, offers 52 AXA Achievement Scholarships. Winners of this award are known as AXA Achievers. They are students who set and reach ambitious goals, demonstrate drive, determination and ability to succeed in college and who have respect for self, family and community. Application deadline is December 15. Visit www.axa-achievement.com for specifics. The Elks National Foundation offers several scholarships. 500 4-year scholarships (Most Valuable Student Scholarships) ranging from $1,000 to $15,000 per year will be awarded based on financial need, leadership, and scholarship. The Elks also offer 4-year $4,000 merit-based scholarships (Legacy Awards) to children and grandchildren of Elks members in good standing. They offer Emergency Educational Grants for one year to children of deceased or totally disabled Elk members. Guidelines, requirements and applications will be available September 2. Applications must be at the local Elks Lodge by January 9. The Indiana Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (IAHPERD) will award four $500 scholarships to Seniors planning on attending an Indiana college or university to pursue a degree in health ed, pe, recreation, dance education or sport administration. Applicants must have a B average (4.0/6.0), be active at Memorial and in the community and demonstrate financial need. Applications are available in the Counseling Office and on online at http://inahaper.org. Application deadline is a January 15 postmark. The Evansville Teachers Federal Credit Union will award ten $2,000 scholarships. Applicants must have at least a 5.0 GPA after 7 semesters (by January) and a parent or guardian must have been members of ETFCU for at least one year prior to the February 1 deadline. The reason it is good to start now is that two letters of reference, an essay and the application form with Counselor info all need to be completed and at the ETFCU office by February1.
